Great vintage years are as rare for the fine cigars as they are for fine wines. Only once or twice a decade, a perfect balance of sunshine and rainfall causes Macanudo's exclusive Connecticut Shade seeds to yield limited quantities of extraordinary wrapper leaves that exceed the high standards for other Macanudo cigars. And after the leaves have been cured and aged, only a few bales are finally deemed to be worthy of Vintage Cabinet Selection designation. 

Since the 1970's, only a select number of years produced Connecticut Shade wrapper that was deemed Vintage quality, 1979, 1984, 1988 and 1993. The 1997 Connecticut Shade crop has been determined to be the newest year for the Macanudo Vintage Cabinet Selection. Macanudo Vintage 1997 takes Vintage to a new level. All of the components are from specially selected crops that are aged in tercios to capture a richer flavor. 

The 1997 Vintage Connecticut Shade wrapper is from what many consider the best Connecticut Shade crop in decades. The rich brown wrappers went through two winter 'sweats' in the curing sheds in  Connecticut before Daniel Nunez determined which leaves could be classified as Vintage 1997. 

The San Andrean binder was selected from the best of the highly rated 1998 crop. The binder leaves are 'Medio Tiempo' which means they were left on the plant 50% longer than normal to ripen. This allowed the leaves to become heavy in texture, dark in color and fuller flavored in taste. The filler blend comes from the 1998 Piloto Cubano and 1998 Mexican San Andrean crops. The leaves are taken from the upper primings, which offer a fuller taste than those from past Macanudo Vintage years.
